Writing Topic:  Why did “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso have a global impact?

Many consider art as a vessel of emotion, able to effectively convey unfiltered feelings in a way that can move hearts. Likewise, “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso, renowned for its unusual beauty and passionate message of peace, managed to leave a lingering effect on the entire globe for years to come. Nonetheless, specifically what elements contributed to Guernica’s long-lasting fame? 

First and foremost, it is widely believed that the factor that played most into Guernica’s profound impact is its fervent anti-war sentiment. “Guernica” was painted to depict the unadulterated terrors the innocent civilians felt during the crossfire. The agonized expressions are said to have evoked feelings of sorrow for the civilians and guilt for being a part of humanity, creating a compelling plea against the brutality of war. For what have the civilians done to deserve such cruelty? In addition, the black and white color contrast further outlines the dark reality of war, intensifying the complete loss of hope the people felt as their entire city crumbled to the ground, reminding humanity of the tragedies of war. 

However Pablo Picasso’s artistic mastery must also be acknowledged in regards to Guernica’s brilliance. Picasso’s dramatic use of Cubism as utilized by the fragmented forms eloquently captures the chaos and despair of the Guernica bombings, creating both an emotionally and visually pleasing experience. All it takes is a mere glance of Picasso’s artwork for one to sense Picasso's raw enthusiasm and emotion. This in turn stirs the hearts of many others, enforcing a message of commemoration for years to come. 

Although Guernica is specifically meant to portray the bombings of Guernica, war is that of a universal issue. Certain symbolisms, such as the anguished mother, allow viewers from different backgrounds to feel a sense of connection and relation to the message of anti-war and woe. This makes Guernica all the more impactful, contributing heavily to its enduring legacy. 

Ultimately, Guernica serves as a powerful and heart-wrenching response to the horrors of war, reminding us humans of our collective goal to strive for peace. It is thanks to its’ anti-war message, global connection, and method of portrayal that has secured its place as a permanent call for humans to choose anything but bloodshed.
